GIAN PAOLO BARBIERI AT MILANO UNICA 43: PHOTOGRAPHY MEETS TEXTILE EXCELLENCE
The exhibition "The Radical Elegance," organized in collaboration with the Gian Paolo Barbieri ETS Foundation, will be on display in the MU Tendenze Sostenibilità area from July 7 to 9, 2026
On the occasion of its 43rd edition, Milano Unica enriches its cultural program with an exhibition dedicated to one of the most influential figures in international fashion photography: “Gian Paolo Barbieri. The Radical Elegance,” organized in collaboration with the Gian Paolo Barbieri ETS Foundation.
Scheduled from July 7 to 9, 2026, within the MU Tendenze Sostenibilità area (Hall 3), the exhibition offers buyers, exhibitors, and industry professionals the opportunity to discover, or rediscover, the work of an artist who helped shape the visual language of Italian and international fashion from the 1960s onward.
Curated by Stefano Fadda and Antonella Matarrese, the exhibition spans three decades of creativity through a selection of images that highlight the elegance, aesthetic research, and visionary approach that made Barbieri a pivotal figure in the history of contemporary photography.
A dialogue between culture, creativity, and craftsmanship
Gian Paolo Barbieri’s images accompanied the global rise of Made in Italy through collaborations with some of the world’s leading fashion houses. His visual language, characterized by compositional rigor, formal elegance, and creative freedom, embodies the core values of excellence expressed by the producers of high-end textiles and accessories exhibiting at Milano Unica.
The exhibition is divided into two sections. The first is dedicated to portraits created between the 1960s and the early 1990s, portraying some of the leading figures in international fashion, culture, and entertainment. The second section brings together a selection of the photographer’s most iconic images alongside the display tables featuring Milano Unica’s Fall/Winter 2027–2028 Collections, creating a direct dialogue between textile research, creative innovation, and artistic vision.
The radical elegance and the spirit of MU IS PUNK!
The initiative forms part of the cultural program that Milano Unica develops around its Tendenze, perfectly in line with the concept of this edition, MU IS PUNK!, where punk is interpreted as an attitude of independent thinking, experimentation, and the challenge of conventions.
Barbieri’s ability to combine discipline and creative freedom, and memory with innovation, reflects the points of convergence between his work and Milano Unica’s ongoing commitment -- and that of the industry as a whole -- to innovation.
An exhibition at the heart of the MU Tendenze Sostenibilità area
The exhibition is hosted in the MU Tendenze Sostenibilità area at the entrance to Hall 3, one of the most visited and strategically important spaces with Milano Unica.
Here, visitors can explore the research and development efforts undertaken by participating companies in the field of sustainability. A selection of materials is presented together with detailed information on composition, process and product certifications, as well as the Sustainability Value Pillars assigned by Milano Unica’s Technical Committee.
QR codes displayed alongside the products enable buyers and professionals to access additional information and gain deeper insight into the manufacturer’s commitment to sustainability and the characteristics of their products.
Gian Paolo Barbieri’s exhibition further enhances this area, creating a dialogue between visual culture, creative research, and textile innovation.
