Microplastics and the fashion industry

One of the most pressing challenges for a truly sustainable supply chain
Technologies - MU Sustainable Innovation

Microplastic pollution of the seas is at the top of environmental concerns. The main source of microplastics (between 70% and 80%) is the degradation of plastic waste in the oceans (secondary microplastics), but it involves the textile sector for the remaining part (primary microplastics): as a matter of fact, 35% of primary microplastics come from residue of washing synthetic fiber garments. Textile research aimed at diminishing waste includes the development of synthetic fibers with greater biodegradability in controlled environments and filtering systems capable of blocking micro-sized fibers. A contribution could come from washing machine manufacturers, with more sophisticated filtration systems, but also from consumers, with the use of protective and filtering bags.
